Every bit of July 2021, 31 states (plus the Commune of Columbia and the U.South. Virgin Islands) allowed voters to indicate their partisan affiliations on voter registration forms and reported full registration numbers publicly. The remaining 19 states either did non inquire voters to betoken partisan affiliation on their registration forms or did not publicly report those totals, according to analysis done past Ballotpedia.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Equally of July 2021, 49.3 million registered voters identified themselves as Democrats. At 39.six%, Democrats represented the unmarried largest share of registered voters in those states that allow voters to indicate partisan affiliation on their registration forms. A total of 36.four 1000000 registered voters identified themselves equally Republicans, representing 29.2% of registered voters in these states.
  • Approximately 38.eight 1000000 registered voters identified themselves as independents or members of third-parties. This amounted to 31.2% of registered voters in these states.
  • In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden (D) received a combined 53.v% of the vote to Donald Trump's (R) 44.seven% beyond these states. Both candidates received a larger percentage of votes than the pct of their respective party'due south registered voters. Independent and third-party voters made upwards 31.2% of all registered voters in these states, while contained and third-political party presidential candidates received 1.9% of the vote.
  • In those states that prompt voters to indicate partisan amalgamation on registration forms, affiliation with a political party may be a condition of participation in that party's primaries. To learn more about primary participation criteria, click hither.

    The map below shows the 31 states that displayed voter registration figures publicly every bit of July 2021. In 22 states, no unmarried group of voters fabricated upwards a majority of registrants: in 10 states, Democrats made upwardly a plurality of registered voters and Republicans made upward a plurality in four.
